NUMALIGARH: A major protest broke out at the Numaligarh Refinery today, with motor drivers employed at the refinery demanding fair compensation and better working conditions. The protest, organized by the Assam Motor Drivers’ Association, Numaligarh Refinery branch, saw hundreds of drivers gather at the refinery’s Pragati gate, shouting slogans and demanding justice.
According to the protesters, they have been exploited by the refinery management, which has denied them minimum wages and other benefits. Despite repeated complaints, the management has failed to address their grievances, forcing them to take to the streets. “We have been exploited for long, and our demands have fallen on deaf ears,” said a protesting driver. The protest has received support from various organizations, including the Numaligarh Refinery Greater Workers’ Union and the Golaghat District Technical Unemployment Union. The Numaligarh Refinery, a major oil refinery in Assam, has been accused of exploiting its workers, including motor drivers. The refinery management has been criticized for its failure to provide fair wages and benefits to its workers.
In the meantime, the protesting drivers have decided not to operate their vehicles within the refinery premises until a satisfactory solution is found.
