NUMALIGARH: Hundreds of locals staged a massive protest in Behora Gaon Panchayat, under the home constituency of Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, alleging severe irregularities and negligence in implementing government welfare schemes. The protest, which took place in the premises of the Behora Gaon Panchayat Office, saw aggrieved villagers voicing their demands for their rightful benefits. The protestors claimed that they had come to lodge complaints against the irregularities and injustices in the execution of government schemes, but were frustrated to find the Panchayat Office locked by 12 noon itself. According to the protestors, this was not an isolated incident, with the office reportedly remaining shut for over a month.
The primary grievances raised during the protest included the denial of crucial welfare benefits to the people, particularly elderly women, differently-abled individuals, and economically weaker families. These benefits include the Orunodoi and government housing assistance. Additionally, the villagers complained about the poor condition of transport infrastructure and the lack of development projects in the area. The Behora Gaon Panchayat, comprising ten wards, has a significant population of tea garden workers who are unable to access essential government schemes despite repeatedly submitting applications.
The protestors strongly condemned the negligence of local representatives and concerned authorities, holding them responsible for the continuous deprivation of the people. They warned that if prompt action is not taken by Bokakhat MLA and Minister Atul Bora, as well as the relevant departments, they would intensify their agitation to a larger scale.
The Assam government, led by Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, has been emphasizing the importance of effective governance and public service delivery. The protest in Behora Gaon Panchayat serves as a reminder of the challenges that still need to be addressed in order to ensure that government schemes reach the intended beneficiaries.
