GAURISAGAR: Amguri Bandhoi, a unique group of former Assam Agitation activists in greater Amguri area in Sivasagar district on Saturday, conferred the Rangamuwa Bir award to prominent litterateur and educationist Dr Rita Chowdhury in a function held at Dikhowmukh College on the outskirts of Gaurisagar in Sivasagar district.
The programme started with Khulbadan performed by Shubhajyoti Goswami. Thereafter, Tukheswar Borthakur, former principal of Gaurisagar HS Industrial Institute, and Jogesh Kishore Phukan, President, Sivasagar Zila Xahitya Xabha, paid floral tribute to the portrait of Rangamuwa Bir and prominent litterateur, poet Binanda Chandra Baruah who wrote the poem Rangali Burhir Dan.
The whole programme was anchored by Jibon Krishna Goswami, secretary, Amguri Bandhai, while Dr Ranjit Kumar Baruah, Principal of Dikhowmukh College, gave the welcome speech. On the other hand, Dr Amorjit Saikia, President, Amguri Bandhoi, and Principal Bir Raghav Moran State College, Doomdooma, narrated the aims and objectives of Amguri Bandhoi.
The other dignitaries who attended the function were Dr Saumarjyoti Mahanta, Principal, Sibsagar Commerce College, Dr Raju Pukan, Principal, Nazira College, Dr Manjit Gogoi, Principal, Jhanji Hemnath Sarma College, Dr Pratim Sarma, Principal, Sibsagar Girls College, Jyoti Prasad Gogoi, former president and secretary, ACTA.
In presence of a huge gathering, Amguri Bandhoi conferred the Rangamuwa Bir award to veteran Dr Rita Choudhury. The award carried a gamusa, a seleng, a citation, a silver Japi, a memento of Rangamuwa Bir and a huge pack of food like rice, curds, and other local vegetables as gifts (Mitiror Tupula). Receiving the Rangamura Bir award for the 4th consecutive year, Dr Rita Chowdhury, winner of the Xahitya Akademi Award, said that she believed in nationalism. Dr Chowdhury, who was an activist of the six-year Assam Agitation, said that she asked herself what the role of thousands of activists like them would be at the end of the agitation.
“So I did not dominate other ordinary workers, but devoted myself completely to reading and writing and took leave of absence. I am going through my own ups and downs with my pen in my hand, I am independent. I am not among the ministers and MLAs,” said the author of seventeen research novels including Deo Langkhui, Makam, and Papia Tarar Sadhu, etc.
In the meeting, Dr Saumarjyoti Mahanta also spoke a few words. Earlier, Amguri Bandhoi gave away the founder president of Amguri Bandhoi Robin Gogoi Memorial award to Dikshita Lahon who passed the recently-declared HSLC examination with flying colours in the greater Amguri area.
