HAILAKANDI: A long-awaited relief for the Rengma Naga community as 35 Rengma Naga families receive land pattas. The Rengma Naga community in Assam's Hailakandi has expressed deep gratitude to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his decisive leadership. These families, who have been residing in the area since 1953, had long sought official recognition of their land rights.

The Assam government's move to grant land pattas has brought immense joy to the community. The Rengma Naga families have thanked CM Sarma for addressing their decades-old demand, marking a significant moment for the community. It needs to be mentioned that the Rengma Naga are a Tibeto-Burman ethnic group inhabiting the Northeast Indian states of Nagaland and Assam.

According to the 2011 Census of India, the population of Rengmas in Nagaland stands at 62,951, and the population of Rengmas in Assam is around 22,000. They call themselves by the names of "Njong" or "Injang.". They belong to the Mongoloid racial stock.

It is believed that the Rengmas, along with other Naga tribes, migrated from Southeast Asia across the Yunnan Mountain ranges and settled down in the upper Burma region.

Meanwhile, preparations are in full swing for 'Jhumair Binandiya', a grand Jhumur dance recital scheduled to be performed on February 24 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Sarusajai, Guwahati.
