GUWAHATI: In a major milestone for Assam, the state has been ranked fourth in The New York Times' prestigious list of "52 Places to Go in 2025," underlining its unique cultural richness, breathtaking landscapes, and emerging tourism infrastructure.

The New York Times pictures Assam as a hidden jewel nestled between Myanmar and Bangladesh, due to its remote charm and cultural uniqueness. Assam is becoming a place of easy accessibility for an international tourist wanting to dip into the authentic aspects of a place.

A key factor in this recognition is the inclusion of the Charaideo Moidams—ancient burial mounds from the Ahom dynasty—on the UNESCO World Heritage list. These 13th to 19th-century sites offer a rare glimpse into the region’s royal history and spiritual traditions.

In 2023-24, Assam attracted over 70 lakh domestic tourists and more than 26,000 international visitors, further bolstering its reputation as a cultural and natural hotspot. The state’s iconic tea gardens, which produce some of the finest tea globally, provide visitors with a tranquil retreat, combining natural beauty with the art of tea cultivation.

Nature enthusiasts flock to Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its population of one-horned rhinoceroses.

To accommodate the growing influx of tourists, Guwahati’s airport is set for a major expansion in 2025, increasing its capacity fourfold and enhancing Assam’s connectivity on regional and global scales.
