SILCHAR: A Facebook post by Atanu Bhattacharjee, the Secretary of the District Sports Association, Silchar, welcoming Gaurav Gogoi as the state Congress President, triggered massive hullabaloo in the sports arena here. At least 21 portfolio holders of the DSA, in a joint letter to the President of the body, asked to immediately remove Bhattacharjee from the post of the General Secretary. Local MLA Dipayan Chakrabarty on Friday had vehemently criticised Bhatacharjee for making a comment on a political party in spite of being the General Secretary of a district sports body.

On Saturday Atanu Bhattacharjee, formerly Municipality Ward Commissioner as well as the former Silchar town Congress president, in his Facebook page congratulated Gaurav Gogoi for being deputed the chief of the state wing of the party. Bhattacharjee further said that he wished to see Gogoi as the next Chief Minister of Assam.

The post created mass ruckus inside the sports body. Dipayan Chakrabarty reportedly discussed the issue with the post holders of the Silchar DSA.  Meanwhile Bhattacharjee deleted the post and in a newer one he said, he had erroneously written his designation. But his clarification could not douse the controversy. Later in the evening, 21 post holders of DSA addressed a press meet and demanded immediate removal of Bhattacharjee. The agitated members said that the DSA was a sports body and had no connection with any political party or development.

Maintaining that the Assam Police SIT was investigating Gogoi's connection with the ISI, MLA Chakrabarty wondered how a General Secretary of a sports body could wish such a suspicious person on assuming a political party post.
