DOOMDOOMA: Tarun Chetia, a former employee of Dhoedam TE and a prominent social worker, passed away at his native village Balijan Siding, Chabua on Wednesday due to old-age-related-ailments. He was 91 and is survived by two sons including Rupam Chetia, a leading citizen of the town and a daughter.
He joined Balijan North TE under Warren Tea Ltd. as an employee first and was later transferred to Dhoedam TE wherefrom he retired as Head Tea House, considered to be an important post in tea estates in those days.
After superannuation from tea garden, he came to live permanently at Gopinath Bordoloi (GNB) Road at the house of his son Rupam Chetia and daughter-in-law Trishna Das Chetia, a former chairperson of Doomdooma Town Committee (now Doomdooma Municipal Board). He was closely associated with the Doomdooma Namghar and renovated its old office room at his own cost.
