Assam: Seven Arrested For Stone Pelting During Waqf Amendment Protest In Silchar

They have been charged with several offenses under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for crimes of unlawful assembly, rioting, and obstruction of public servants, among others.

SILCHAR: In a major breakthrough, seven people have been arrested in relation to stone pelting and instigating violence during a protest against the Waqf Amendment in Silchar on April 13. The arrests were made late on April 15 after a police operation in the Bagadahar and Kashipur areas, falling under the Silchar Police Station jurisdiction.

As per the Cachar Police, nearly 300 protestors were present at Berenga village at about 9:30 AM on April 13 and had planned to take out a march towards Silchar town. As police tried to disperse them with a mild lathicharge, things took a turn for the worse, and the protesters, in turn, pelted the police with stones.

The persons arrested have been named as Nazmul Islam Laskar, Bidar Laskar, Rohit Hussain Laskar, Dilwar Hussain, Rohit Ahmed Mazumder, Atikur Rahman Laskar, and Riyajul Laskar. They have been charged with several offenses under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for crimes of unlawful assembly, rioting, and obstruction of public servants, among others. Additionally, they are charged under Section 3 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act, 1984.

Cachar Superintendent of Police stated that the protest was deemed undemocratic and unlawful, emphasizing that the police took immediate action to maintain order. The investigation is ongoing, with efforts to locate additional suspects who are currently absconding.
