BARPETA: In the Barpeta district of Assam, a 17-year-old girl was attacked with acid by a man who had been pursuing her, Assam Police informed on Wednesday. They also mentioned that the girl is receiving treatment at a hospital right now.
The incident took place three days back when the man approached the girl and her sister on Sunday as they were leaving a local book fair. He threw acid on the girl and ran away from the spot.
When the neighbours heard the girl screaming, they shifted her quickly to a nearby hospital. Her health is said to be critical, and she was later referred to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
A case has been filed against the assailant, who was taken into custody from his home. "The accused has been taken into custody and is being questioned. An official from the police said, "He has admitted to his crime.
Previously, official records revealed that the capital city of Guwahati has seen a large number of crimes of various types in the past few years. In 2022, the city saw 62 cases of rape, 744 cases of crime against women, 21 women-related murders, 2832 thefts, 7 dacoities, 222 incidents of fraud, 396 suicides, 10 dowry-related incidents, and 7 love-related incidents. Similarly, for the year 2021, the city saw 60 cases of rape, 1562 cases of crime against women, 16 women-related murders, 4492 thefts, 5 dacoities, 845 incidents of fraud, 384 suicides, 2 dowry-related incidents, and 8 love-related incidents.
