Assam STF’s Expansive Operations Lead to Record Seizures and Arrests

Guwahati: The Special Task Force (STF) of Assam has reported significant progress in combating organized crime, drug trafficking, and other unlawful activities.

laicepsA comparative analysis reveals a remarkable escalation in the effectiveness and scope of STF operations between October 4, 2008 – February 28, 2023, and the period starting March 1, 2023, to December 31, 2024. The latest figures underscore a transformation in the STF’s operational capabilities and outcomes.

Over the years, the STF has intensified its operations against drug and narcotic smuggling. From October 2008 to February 2023, the STF seized 534.25 grams of heroin. This figure soared to 59 kg 414.96 grams during the more recent period. Psychotropic tablets, including YABA, saw a dramatic rise from 13,920 to 9,67,898 units seized.

Similarly, the seizure of Phensedyl cough syrup jumped from 320 bottles to a staggering 37,000 bottles, while the quantity of Ganja confiscated skyrocketed from 47.75 kg to 3999.681 kg. For the first time, 1 kg of Methamphetamine was seized during operations.

The STF’s actions against extremist and terrorist organizations also achieved notable success. In the recent period, 21 extremists were arrested, including individuals linked to Jihadi/Islamic extremism, ULFA, Maoist movements, and Manipur-based organizations. This includes the significant apprehension of the India Chief of ISIS.

Addressing illegal infiltration, 18 individuals, including 15 touts, 2 Bangladeshi nationals, and 1 Rohingya, were apprehended. This targeted approach highlights the STF’s resolve to curb unauthorized border activities.
