GUWAHATI: The Assam government has successfully met the targets of infrastructure development as it constructed more than 31,800 kilometers of roads and completed 1,400 bridges under different initiatives aimed at strengthening connectivity in the state.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma posted these developments on the social media site X, terming it the "Assam Growth Story." He pointed out that the focus of the government was to upgrade transport and road infrastructure, particularly in Aspirational Districts. "Improving connectivity in every nook and corner of the state has been the cornerstone of the Assam Growth Story," Sarma posted, tagging #AssamAhead.
Under the state's initiatives, 9,066 roads stretching 31,869 km and 1,401 bridges have been built. In addition, geo-tagging of 4,125 habitations with populations of 250 or more has been done, out of which 3,322 are under the PMGSY-IV scheme. The PM-Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan identified 834 habitations across 652 villages, out of which 543 are located in aspirational districts.
A recent milestone was the Bhumi Pujan of the Loh Purush Bishnuram Medhi Setu, a 12.2 km bridge over the Brahmaputra connecting Palasbari and Sualkuchi. Expected to boost regional connectivity, this project is to be completed by June 2028 at an estimated cost of Rs 3,197 crore.
He mentioned the rapid development of the Brahmaputra bridges, stating that there are already six that have been operational since 2014 and several more underway.
