MANGALDAI: A storm is brewing in Santipara, Krishna Nagar, Gerimari, and Ward No. 1, as residents and cross section of the society have expressed outrage over a proposal recommended by the Sub-Divisional Land Advisory Committee (SDLAC), Darrang. The proposal, submitted by an NGO, seeks to settle a portion of land under Dag No 2383 and 2384.

For nearly three decades, this land has been a vibrant public space, hosting festivals like Rongali Bihu, Sadak Puja, and Saraswati Puja. It’s also the only open area where local children, including students from nearby government schools namely Mangaldai Girls HS School, Mangaldai Town Boy’s LP School and Mangaldai Town Girl’s LP School, can engage in sports.

The community is fighting back, citing a past promise from the Deputy Commissioner, Darrang, to preserve the land. With memories of a two-decade-old battle to protect the land, residents are united in their opposition to the proposal. The fate of this public space hangs in the balance.
