JORHAT: The Jorhat members of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), a major student organization of Assam, staged a dharna and blocked several roads as a mark of protest against dilapidated road condition. Such deplorable condition of the roads has become nightmarish for the commuters while transportation of even serious patients to the Jorhat Medical College Hospital is turning out to be an uphill task. The agitated AJYCP protesters along with the public blocked the Na-Ali, AAU Road and Sadar Road near Don Bosco, Lichubari leaving the school goers, office goers and the public to take another route to reach their destination.
At least 75% of Jorhat roads are not motorable while heavy vehicles of the Army, Assam Rifles and the IAF ply on some roads. Significantly, after the present government came to power in the State, not even a minimum of development work has been initiated for the development of the roads. Even repair works have not seen the light of the day with the needful expenditure provided from MLA or MP Local Area Development Fund. Public representatives like Jorhat MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami, who is also the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assemble and Jorhat MP Kamakhay Prasad Tasa seem to be indulging in high talks sans any work, said Padum Gogoi and Fardin Ahmed, both senior members of the Jorhat unit of the AJYCP.
