GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that, as part of the government's commitment to inclusivity, the state administration will establish a shelter home in Guwahati for the transgender community, aimed at providing a safe and supportive environment for them. This initiative was introduced during the Assam budget session.
CM Sarma took to his X handle and wrote, "A shelter for the transgender community. Our government is ringing in a new era of inclusivity. We are setting up a dedicated shelter home in Guwahati for the transgender community so that they have a safe space to stay in."
The Assam CM emphasized the government’s commitment to inclusivity, stating, “Our government is ringing in a new era of inclusivity.” This initiative is part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to promote social welfare and equality.
The shelter house aims to provide transgender people with a safe and friendly environment, guaranteeing access to necessary supplies and a place to stay with dignity. This move demonstrates a major step towards more social acceptance and equality, aligning with the government's larger initiatives to support the transgender community.
Notably, the state government has also allocated Rs. 100 crore as a one-time grant for Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, facilitating advanced research, modern preservation techniques and enhanced documentation efforts.
