MORIGAON: Morigaon was struck by tragedy on Tuesday night when a road accident resulted in the deaths of three young men from Assam's Morimushlim village. The incident occurred at Sonari village on the Morigaon-Nagaon connecting road, where an unidentified vehicle, believed to be a Bolero pickup truck, collided with a motorcycle carrying the three youths before fleeing the scene.
The deceased have been identified as Sajidul, Dipmoni, and Sabid, who were villagers of Morimushlim village. They were on a motorcycle bearing registration number AS 01FL 5689 while on their way to Nagaon when they were hit by the speeding car. The impact was so massive that Dipmoni and Sabid were killed on the spot, while Sajidul suffered critical injuries.
He was taken to Morigaon Civil Hospital on emergency treatment but then was referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) when his health further declined. Due to the unavailability of ICU facilities at GMCH, he was taken to a private hospital where he eventually lost his life.
The sudden loss of the three youths has plunged their families and the entire Morimushlim village into mourning. Sajidul operated a computer DTP shop, while Sabid worked as a tailor in Guwahati, both striving to improve their futures.
In the wake of the accident, officials of the police and transport department had visited the site and had ordered an inquiry to trace the fleeing vehicle. The incident points towards concerns of unsafe driving on the Morigaon highway, where such fatal accidents have happened before. The people of the area are now arranging for a collective funeral for the victims, with last rites to be performed at the village cemetery after post-mortem formalities.
