Silchar: A Tripura-based human trafficker sustained bullet injury as the Sribhumi police fired at him after he allegedly tried to snatch and overpower two security persons. The incident happened at Patharkandi along the Indo Bangla border on Saturday early morning. The accused person, identified as Dilowar Hussain, a resident of Dharmanagar, was allegedly involved in a number of human trafficking.
Sources said, Dilowar was mainly involved in smuggling individuals from Bangladesh into India in last six months through various border points after the political unrest in the neighbouring country. He was apprehended during an operation led by local authorities.
Hussain was detained at Sribhumi railway station. Police sources said, the Sribhumi SP Partha Pratim Das had instructed the police to take the accused to the Phulkandi area of the Patharkandi for further investigation. During the site visit, Hussain reportedly attempted to snatch a firearm from the police, prompting officers to open fire. He sustained a gunshot wound on his leg, while two police personnel were also injured in the altercation. Dilowar, along with two police constables were admitted in health centre for treatment.
Hussain had allegedly facilitated the illegal entry of approximately 70 individuals into India via the Assam and Tripura borders. Authorities suspect that he operates within a larger network, and investigations into the syndicate are underway.
