GUWAHATI: Over Rs. 2 lakh worth of counterfeit currency was seized by Assam police in Jorabat in a car that was travelling from Meghalaya to Guwahati. The counterfeit notes, which were all in denominations of Rs. 500, were discovered during a regular inspection on Friday evening, according to sources.

In relation to the incident, two individuals were taken into custody identified as Jibai Angkya and Bytanlang Kharkhongor, both residents of Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district.

In a major breakthrough, the Border Security Force (BSF) Guwahati Frontier thwarted a smuggling attempt along the Indo-Bangladesh border in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district. Acting on intelligence, BSF troops intercepted foreign currency, including 100,000 Bangladeshi Taka and $103,800 USD, valued at approximately Rs. 89 lakh.

BSF Guwahati confirmed the incident on X, highlighting their vigilance in safeguarding the borders. Meanwhile, in Assam, two individuals, Gobinda Barman and Chandan Ray, were arrested in Dhubri for possessing counterfeit Indian currency. Authorities recovered two fake notes, 1,500 blank sheets, chemicals, and a scooter, suspecting a larger counterfeit network.

Separately, police and CRPF’s 147th Battalion seized fake currency worth Rs. 1.05 lakh in Hailakandi district last month. The operation in Abdullahpur Part II led to the arrest of Abul Hussain Barbhuiya with 210 fake Rs. 500 notes. Investigations into both cases are ongoing.
