GUWAHATI: In a significant operation against drug trafficking, Assam Police arrested two persons and seized 182 grams of heroin during a late-night operation in Amingaon area under Kamrup district on Thursday.
The arrested suspects have been identified as 23-year-old Masoom Choudhury from Silchar and 24-year-old Kazi Sanowar Hussain from Barpeta. Based on reliable intelligence inputs, a police team flagged down a vehicle bearing registration number AS-24B-2485 suspected of carrying narcotics from Silchar to Barpeta.
"Thirteen soap boxes having heroin weighing 182 grams in aggregate, excluding packaging, had been recovered hidden inside a secret compartment of the vehicle," Pranab Jyoti Goswami, Assam Police CPRO confirmed. Both have been taken into custody and all other legal procedures initiated.
Earlier this week, Assam police's Special Task Force also disposed of 37,000 bottles of contraband Phensedyl cough syrup at a waste management facility here in Panikhaiti. The Drug Disposal Committee, set up under Partha Sarathi Mahanta, IGP-STF, has been constantly fighting the drugs trade.
Between March 2023 and November 2024, the STF seized narcotics worth approximately Rs. 800 crore and arrested 325 people associated with illegal trafficking. The continuing efforts of Assam Police demonstrate a determination to remove the drugs from the state once and for all. Investigations into this case are underway.
