KOKRAJHAR: The new Executive Body of the United Bodo People’s Organization (UBPO) takes over the charge for the next two years after the oath-taking ceremony held at the Cultural Complex of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, Ahomgaon in Guwahati today. The new Executive Body was formed in its meeting held at Sanjari Nwgwr, Simen Chapori, in Dhemaji district on January 26 last.
Manuranjan Basumatary and Pitambar Brahma were retained as the president and the general secretary for a second consecutive term with little change in other portfolios. Badal Muchahary, Ranjan Basumatary, and Lalit Chandra Brahma were taken as vice presidents; Sani Boro and Jatin Boro became assistant general secretaries, while Pranjita Boro, Sushant Mushahary, Maneswar Basumatary, Kabita Basumatary, and Ghanakanta Mahela were taken as secretaries. Advisor of the UBPO Hareswar Narzary pledged the oath of new president Manuranjan Basumatary while Basumatary pledged the oath of all other portfolio holders.
In his speech, the founder president of the UBPO and CEM of BKWAC, Mihiniswar Basumatary, said the UBPO was formed to reiterate their demand for the creation of an autonomous council for the Boro-Kachari people living outside BTC districts in Assam for the protection of identity, culture, language and literature, political rights, protection of land, and socio-economic development. He said Bodofa UN Brahma started the Bodoland democratic mass movement to create a separate state, and the demand for the creation of the Nilachal Autonomous Council in the south bank was also part of this movement. There is no evidence that Bodos were given their constitutional rights without a movement, he said, adding that there had also been an armed movement along with a democratic mass movement to fulfil their demands, he said, adding that the 3rd Bodo Accord was signed in 2020, and under clause 6.1, the BKWAC was formed with the BTR accord for the development of culture, language, medium and literature, political rights, and protection of lands. He called upon the UBPO leaders and activists to work together for the welfare and development of the community with collective responsibility.
New president of the UBPO, Manuranjan Basumatary, said the BKWAC was formed under clause 6.1 of the BTR accord, but in the last five years, there had been neither notification of villages and delimitation of constituencies of the council nor holding of elections. He said the clause 6.3 of the BTR accord clearly mentioned that the non-privincialized Bodo medium schools would be provincialized and teachers would be appointed on a need-based basis, but the condition of Bodo medium schools outside BTC remained in the same state of affairs.
