KOKRAJHAR: As elections to BTC are coming near, the activities of the political parties picked up in an extensive way. A grand joining programme of UPPL was held at Rupnath Brahma Field, Ramfalbil under Dotma constituency in Kokrajhar on Thursday.

As many as 2250 members coming from BPF, Congress, and other organizations joined the UPPL. The new members were welcomed and felicitated by UPPL President and BTC chief Pramod Boro, MP Joyanta Basumatary, MLA Lawrence Islary, EM-Ukhil Mushahary, MCLA- Madhav Chandra Chetri, and senior UPPL leaders.

In his speech, chief of BTR and UPPL President Pramod Boro said that there had been hatred, communal violence and fratricidal killings but after the UPPL-led coalition government came to power, peace among all communities returned. He said that BPF had lacked transparency, mission and vision, and promoted corruption and nepotism. He also said that only the UPPL model of governance will prevail in BTC. After 2020, the people of BTC have witnessed transformation in all spheres, with land pattas given to 2.72 lakh families, industrial park coming up in Ramfalbil, and mini stadiums in 40 constituencies in the name of Bir Chilagang Basumatary, founder Chairman of BLT, worth Rs 5 crore each, he said, adding that the UPPL did not come to BTC to play dirty politics but to reform and transform the council in every respect. He also said that the UPPL will remain committed in the future too.

Boro said that the present BTR Government was working to realise Bodofa’s dream of establishing Bodos as a master race and taking initiative to reform the society, discouraging the youths from drugs and alcohol. He said that the BTR Government gave rehabilitation to NDFB martyrs and similarly, was going to provide rehabilitation to martyrs of BLT and ABSU movements. He further said that the remaining martyr families would be given ex-gratia grants on June 12.

Addressing the huge gathering, Minister UG Brahma said that the BJP, UPPL, and AGP alliance will come back to power in BTC in the 2025 elections to be held in September. The coalition team will win at least 25 to 30 seats and the UPPL-BJP-AGP alliance will form the 2nd consecutive term, he said, adding that UPPL is going to capture the Dotma seat in the forthcoming elections. He assured that people of the region would get development in all spheres if they come back to power.

In his speech, former deputy chief of BTC Kampa Borgoyari said that he was the leader of the BPF and served as the vice-president of the party and deputy chief of BTC for a long time but for certain reasons, left the BPF and joined the UPPL. He said, “Some people call me ‘Dragonfly’. Yes I am a dragonfly in a sense because there is logic to clarify about it. I left BPF because there had been no collective thinking and decision in the fifteen years of elected government and I realized that only UPPL is the right platform to give equal rights and development to all people through collective responsibility.” He said that clashes among blood brothers and communal violence were regular phenomena during that time but no one wanted such violence anymore. He also said that without political unification and united political voice, no one would come to hear the problems of Bodoland and thus time had come to get united under UPPL which was the only emerging and possible destination.

UPPL General Secretary Raju Kr Narzary said that both Delhi and Dispur had confirmed the returning of the UPPL-led coalition government to power and no other party would be able to form government in BTC. He said the BJP-led NDA Government at the centre had been providing free rice to every poor household, health insurance, farmers’ benefit scheme, etc. and similarly, the Government of BTR had given land pattas to over 2.5 lakh families, appointments to hundreds of teachers, Orunodoi schemes, financial assistance to poor families, religious centres, students, and other privileges which did not happen earlier. He also said that 1.43 lakh persons of five constituencies of Kokrajhar district will get Orunodoi schemes.

The joining meeting which was chaired by UPPL block President Shankarlal Basumatary was attended by Lok Sabha MP Joyanta Basumatary, former deputy chief of BTC Kampa Borgoyari, MLA Lawrence Islary, EM Ukhil Mushahary, ex- MCLA Jyatirindra Brahma, and others.
