SHILLONG: Veteran Assamese actress Gyanda Kakati, widely celebrated for her remarkable contributions to Indian cinema, passed away at 92.

She died at Bethany Hospital in Shillong after a prolonged illness. Her passing marks the end of an era in Assamese cinema, leaving behind a lasting legacy.

Kakati, born in 1932, made her debut in Assamese cinema with Parghat, which marked the beginning of a distinguished career. Known for her beauty, grace, and exceptional acting talent, she quickly became an iconic figure in Indian cinema. Kakati’s cosmopolitan charm and natural elegance made her a beloved figure in the industry.

In addition to her work in Assamese cinema, Kakati made notable contributions to Bengali films, with memorable performances in Nilachaley Mahaprabhu, Garner Math, and Barma. Her collaborations with renowned actors, such as Ahindra Choudhury, further solidified her reputation as a versatile actress.

Among her many achievements, Kakati was honored with the prestigious Bishnu Rabha Award by the Assam Government in 2002. Some of her most celebrated films include Piyali Phukan (1955), Sarapat (1956), Lakhimi (1957), Ronga Police (1958), Puberun (1959), Narakasur (1961), and Rag-Birag (1996).

The Union Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal expressed about the loss on X.

Politician Bobbeeta Sharma paid tribute to Kakati on social media, sharing, "Our beloved Jnanada Kakati Baideo is no more. I went to Shillong to meet her today at Bethany Hospital. Just a few minutes ago, I learned that she has left us. May she rest in eternal peace. End of an Era..."

Her passing is deeply mourned by her fans, colleagues, and the entire Assamese and Indian film industry. Kakati's presence, wisdom, and kindness will be remembered by all who had the privilege of working with her.
