Guwahati: Veteran Odissi and Xatriya dancer from Assam, Gorima Hazarika, passed away at the age of 83 here on Friday.
Notably, apart from being a Kathak dancer, Hazarika was also in painting, set designing, and choreography. She was an exceptional Xatriya dancer of her time.
She was born on April 27, 1939, to Lokbandhu Dr. Bhubaneshwar Barua and Indraprabha Barua in Assam's Guwahati. She was the youngest of five siblings.
From a very young age, she began taking dance lessons and eventually became an expert in Kathak and Xatriya.
In 1962, she got herself enrolled in the Delhi School of Art 1962, and in 1982 she founded Mitali Kala Kendra in Assam under the guidance of Odissi Guru Muralidhar Majhi of Rabindra Bharati University.
She worked continuously with Pt. Dr. Maheswar Neog and took Xatriya throughout the world and also played an important role in changing the costume of Xatriya dance, doing away with the plain white cloth and using paat and buta designs.
In 1992, she also performed at the first South Asian festival of SAARC countries, while in 1998 she performed at the Unity Concert.
A freedom fighter from Assam, Jatin Goswami passes away at the age of 97 in Guwahati.
According to reports, Goswami passed away at around 4.20 am on Wednesday at his residence on Karnachal road in the Silpukhuri area of Guwahati.
Born on September 17, 1925, in Patacharkuchi in the Bajali district of the state, Goswami was a prominent figure during the freedom struggle.
