TINSUKIA: A street fight broke out on Monday afternoon in the Lekhapani area of Assam's Tinsukia district, which is located just 150 meters away from the local police station. Two groups were involved, accused of operating illegal coal trade, as the fight began after a failed negotiation regarding mining activities in the area.
According to eyewitnesses, the fight broke out in broad daylight, with both parties running along the road and attacking each other. Shockingly, no police personnel were available to intervene during the violent confrontation, which raised questions about the ability of law enforcement to maintain order in the locality.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Tinsukia, Abhijit Gurav, said that the complaints from both parties had been registered and a thorough investigation was being conducted. He said, "The local residents and the members of the Sulfa group were involved in the conflict that had earlier been stirred up by provocations from both factions.
Reports indicate that the authorities have apprehended people from both sides and are conducting detailed interrogations to uncover the circumstances related to the incident. The disputes with regard to coal mining rights and operations have long been a source of tension in this region as rivalry between miners, traders, and transporters leads to violent confrontations regularly.
The reports also indicate that a BJP leader got injured during the clash, which further points to the volatile nature of the situation in Lekhapani.
