DIBRUGARH: A wild animal, initially suspected to be a leopard, was spotted near the Performing Arts Center, close to the China Gate, on the Dibrugarh University campus on Sunday evening. The students and staff of the Dibrugarh University were concerned about their safety after hearing news about the animal at the University campus.
The University authority has informed the forest department about the spotting of the animal. The forest department reached the spot but the animal had left the place before their arrival. “We got information regarding the spotting of the animal at the university campus. It had come from the nearby tea garden area,” said a forest official.
Meanwhile, the forest department has placed a cage in the university campus. “The back side of Dibrugarh University is surrounded by a tea garden and may be the animal comes from there in search of food,” said an official of Dibrugarh University.
Dibrugarh Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) BV Sandeep confirmed to The Sentinel that the animal which was spotted in the Dibrugarh University was not a leopard. “The creature looked like a leopard but it was not. It may have been a wild cat,” he said.
