BOKAKHAT: The human-elephant conflict in various parts of Assam has taken a grave turn. In many places, people’s sleep has been disrupted. While the people of Assam feel pride about elephants, they are now facing a serious disaster due to this ongoing conflict. Year after year, the situation has intensified and now reached a critical point.
The destruction of major forest habitats, once home to wildlife, by humans, has led to a severe crisis for wild elephants in terms of corridors, shelter, and food. As a result, elephants have become increasingly aggressive, leading to casualties not only among humans but also among the elephants themselves. In Golaghat district, this conflict has now spread to previously unaffected areas. Recently, the lush greenery of Golaghat district has fallen prey to encroachers. According to available data, over the past six years, 30 people have died in the Golaghat forest division due to this conflict.
A herd of around 30 wild elephants in the Numaligarh Tea Estate has been seen turning aggressive during the day. Among the herd, one GPS-tracked wild elephant repeatedly charges at local residents. The herd roams along National Highway 39 and the BMP connecting road, obstructing public movement.
Residents of the BMP area are left terrified and fear that the situation may worsen during the nights.
