MORANGI: Wild elephants have been causing significant destruction in Morangi, Assam, as they roam through residential areas and crop fields. The herds have been damaging homes and trampling rice fields, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake.
The situation has been especially dire in Morangi Mouza, where several homes have been destroyed by marauding elephants.
Wild elephants have also been seen grazing in fields and tea gardens, disrupting farming activities and leading to considerable economic losses for local farmers. The situation worsened last night when a house was entirely destroyed by a marauding elephant.
In the Goranga fields, a herd of elephants has been creating considerable distress for local farmers by wandering through their fields and trampling crops. Some of these elephants have become increasingly aggressive, with several instances of them charging at people.
Experts suggest that the aggressive behavior may be triggered by provocation from certain individuals, intensifying the conflict between humans and the wild elephants.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, at Rangbeng in the Doboka reserve forest, a group of wild elephants on Friday night devastated a sizable portion of a side-specific plantation under the CAMPA scheme, encompassing more than three hectares of land.
According to sources of forest department, the herd of wild elephants, consisting of twenty wild elephants entered into the plantation site and destroyed almost all plants in three hectares of forest land in Nagaon district portion of the reserve forest under Kathiatoli forest range.
