Assam Youth Drowns Amidst Ashokastami Celebrations

The incident took place in the Dumerguri locality under the Bongaigaon district of the state.

GUWAHATI: In a heartbreaking incident, a young man drowned in the Aie river while taking part in the Ashokastami celebrations in the Abhayapuri region of the state of Assam. The incident took place in the Dumerguri locality under the Bongaigaon district of the state.

Local people mentioned that the youth had visited the region and went for a dip in the Aie river on the holy occasion of Ashokastami along with four of his friends. Three of the five friends were caught in the current of the Aie river and got carried away. Out of them, two somehow managed to escape from the current, but one of them, unfortunately, could not.

One named Sanjib Sarkar reportedly could not escape and went missing in the river current. His dead body was recovered after more than four hours of a search and rescue operation carried out by the police as well as local people. He was a student of Abhayapuri College.

According to the police, the organisers of the Ashokastami Mela in Dumerguri of Abhayapuri did not have any permission from the authorities to organise the event and the president of the organising committee was taken into custody by the local police in relation to the incident. The president of the committee however mentioned that they had put forward the necessary applications to the authorities, but did not receive any replies from the authorities. He also mentioned that the youth went to take a dip outside the demarcated area which was maned using boats and volunteers.
