Assamese Diaspora in USA Celebrates Rongali Bihu on April 19

The USA based Assamese diaspora celebrated Rongali Bihu in Maryland of USA on of April 19.

Bongaigaon: The USA based Assamese diaspora celebrated Rongali Bihu in Maryland of USA on of April 19. The festivities were marked by a grand and colourful function that recreated scenes reminiscent of the fanfare back home in Assam. It was an occasion to reconnect to one’s roots and a platform to showcase the best of Assamese cuisine, attire and culture.

About 100 people from 3 states of USA including Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia gathered at Rocky Hill Middle School of Maryland to celebrate Rongali Bihu. The programme started with lightening lamp by senior members of USA based Assamese diaspora followed by different culture programs such as chorus, Bihu group dance, solo Bihu dance etc. Most of the people assembled there took part in the ‘Bihu Husori’ performed by DMV (Washington DC+ Maryland+Virginia) Bihu husori team.

“It is the time when our mind goes back to our homeland, Assam. We get attached here with our culture, our soul. We are proud to be Assamese and want to remain proud Assamese ever,” said the people gathered here.

In parallel, food was arranged for afternoon snacks having assamese ethnic food such as jalpan, narikol laru, til laru, pitha and many more. Then assamese dinner with fish, chicken, goat curry, rice, roti, etc were served.

“DMV Assamese community is celebrating this Rongali Bihu since 2005 with all the Assamese people from these 3 states together i.e., Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia. It was started in a small extend first but now, most of the Assamese people are getting involved in this occasion. We hope to attach more people here in future those who are not yet attached,” the organizer said.

A magazine namely “Jaapi” was inaugurated in this occasion here to showcase and treasure the moments, feeling of Assamese culture.
