MANGALDAI: The touch of Bohag has brought waves of joy to the hearts of Assamese residents in Mumbai. Like every year, Rongali Bihu was celebrated with tremendous enthusiasm, vibrant vibes, and festive spirit across various parts of the city.

“Gamkharu,” one of the key organizers and an active Assamese women’s organization in Western Mumbai comprising around twenty women, has been promoting Assamese language, literature, and culture in the diaspora for over a decade. The organization also serves the underprivileged through various social initiatives.

To preserve the significance of Rongali Bihu during the vibrant spring season, Assamese households in Mumbai performed Husori, praying for the well-being of families. Notably, Gamkharu uses the donations collected from Husori performances to support humanitarian efforts. These include contributions towards the cancer treatment of two women from Assam admitted to Tata Memorial Hospital and an annual scholarship for an Assamese female student. Every Gamkharu member and their families generously contribute to these initiatives.

Despite busy schedules and challenges, all members strive to uphold Assamese heritage and traditions in distant Mumbai. According to the organization, beneficiaries include Sumi Bora from Lakhimpur, Joyshree Bora from Nagaon, Rina Das from Rani, Piku Bora from Nagaon, Marina Gogoi from Dibrugarh, Niru Das from Nalbari, and many other women and students from Assam.

Such sincere efforts by Assamese women in the diaspora, coupled with their dedicated celebration of Rongali Bihu, have set a unique and exemplary standard. This year’s Husori was led by Gamkharu’s General Secretary Geeta Sharma, along with members Udita Bhattacharya, Meenakshi Phukan, Rita Saikia, Rekha Bora, Rumi Deka, Jun Saikia, Pratisha Bora, Deepali Barua, Indrani Dutta, Indrani Baishya, Ruplekha Kalita, Seema Chakraborty, Meera Kalita, Geetali Konwar, Bhumika Kalita, and Kangkana Phukan.
