RANGAPARA: In an effort to curb the production and sale of illicit liquor, the Excise Department carried out a major operation in Assam's Rangapara. The drive led to the dismantling of 10 illegal liquor brewing units and the seizure of related materials.

Excise Inspector Madhurya Talukdar and Sub-Inspector Jayanta Choudhury led the operation, which started in Amaribari’s Bherbhori village, targeting multiple illegal brewing units. The crackdown was later expanded to the Rangapara Railway Hospital area and Upper Kachari village in Phulbari.

The operation tackled a persistent issue long blamed for harming the region’s social and educational environment. Despite earlier efforts, illicit brewing activities continued to thrive, sparking concerns about their adverse impact, especially on the youth.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, Tezpur police effectively foiled a large shipment of Arunachali whisky close to the Koliabhomora Bridge in a major operation against the illegal liquor trade.

Based on reliable information, a police unit positioned themselves in a strategic location close to the bridge and stopped a suspicious truck. After a careful examination, it was discovered that the heavy-load vehicle was transporting 700 cartons of premium Arunachali whisky, which had a market value of worth more than Rs. 25 lakhs.

Likewise, Assam Police intercepted a truck loaded with illegal foreign liquor in the Khakarajan area of Borpathar on Sunday. The truck, registered as AS-01-JC-7426, was en route from Lakhipur, Guwahati, to Kahimal when it was flagged down for a routine check.

At first sight, the cargo truck seemed to carry food cartons, but investigation led to nearly 300 cartons of expensive foreign liquor that hidden in the containers under the disguise of food boxes. The liquor was well masqueraded in an apparent attempt to conceal it.
