MARGHERITA: The BJP-led government in Assam has undertaken various development projects since its formation, as highlighted by BJP National President Amit Shah, who emphasized the need for a growth-oriented government in Assam to work together with the Prime Minister’s vision. However, it appears that not all projects have been executed successfully.

The Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources (NLCPR) scheme, a Central Government initiative, has been doing drain work at the Margherita Municipal Board area since 2017, but unfortunately, the project has been marred by allegations of malpractice and poor quality materials.

Margherita Bazaar Committee President Santosh Chetry and Secretary (i/c) Bappa Paul expressed their dissatisfaction with the project, stating that despite the initial satisfaction with the BJP-led government’s development work, the drain’s depth is insufficient, which may lead to waterlogging issues during the upcoming monsoon season.

The concerns raised by the Margherita Bazaar Committee are valid, and it’s essential for the authorities to investigate these allegations and ensure that the project meets the required standards, said Santosh Chetry. The BJP’s success in Assam during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections was largely due to its development activities and the performance of the BJP-led government in the state, therefore, it’s crucial for the State Government to address these concerns and maintain transparency in its development projects, said Bappa Paul.

Santosh Chetry has raised concerns about the subpar materials used in the construction of the drain under the NLCPR scheme in the Margherita Municipal Board area. He appealed to Margherita Municipal Board Executive Officer Dheeraj Bhattacharjee, Chairman Anand Kumar Sharma, and JE Jitul Nath to take action against those responsible.

Chetry also appealed to the Margherita Municipal Board Chairman to construct more public toilets in the Margherita Bazaar area as with over 1,000 shops and shopping complexes, and thousands of customers visiting daily, the lack of public toilets is a significant issue, particularly for female customers who are forced to use nearby houses for defecation and urination. It is worth noting that the Margherita Municipal Board has taken action in the past to address issues related to public facilities, such as sealing the Segunbari Tea Factory of Margherita over unpaid taxes.

A Margherita Municipal Board official told this correspondent that they shall look at these allegations seriously.
