DIPHU: As student and youth organisations took up the issue of encroachment on Professional Grazing Reserve (PGR) and Village Grazing Reserve (VGR) land at Kheroni in Assam's West Karbi Anglong, the year 2025 started with fresh agitation in the hill district of Karbi Anglong.

On Thursday, the Karbi Students & Youth Council (KSYC) and the Karbi Students Association (KSA-Samson), led by Samson Teron, held a demonstration in this respect. Several demonstrators, accompanied by their leaders from other groups, took part.

The demonstrators were upset that encroachers were not being removed from PGR/VGR property sooner. Several leaders and followers also tonsured their heads as a sign of their desperation.

The KAAC was also accused by the demonstrators of failing to take action to prevent outsiders from encroaching on the district's land. Throughout the protest, their slogans, including "We want eviction" and "PGR/VGR eviction korok," were heard repeatedly.

Khorsing Teron, the chairman of the Joint Action Committee for Autonomous State (JACAS), commented on the matter and called for swift action.

“Encroachment is not limited to Kheroni’s PGR/VGR; it’s happening in other areas too. Evictions should be carried out in all such places,” Teron added.

The KSA central committee's general secretary, Debojyoti Teron, later urged the state government to step in.

“Karbi Anglong is part of Assam, and the PGR/VGR issue is a matter for the state. If the state government fails to act, the people of Karbi Anglong will resort to stronger agitation,” he warned.
