SILCHAR, Assam: In a shocking case echoing the Bollywood film Munna Bhai MBBS, a man pretending to be a qualified gynaecologist has been arrested in Assam after performing more than 50 caesarean sections and gynaecological surgeries over the past decade.

According to senior police officer Numal Mahatta, Malakar was arrested while performing a C-section surgery.

“We verified his documents and found all his certificates were fake. He had no medical qualifications,” Mahatta said.

Wider Crackdown on Quacks Across Assam
Malakar, a resident of Sribhumi in Assam, has been remanded to five days of police custody by a local court. His arrest is part of a broader crackdown by the state government on fraudulent medical practitioners.

Earlier this year, the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led administration launched an anti-quackery and vigilance cell that works closely with the state police to identify and act against fake doctors. So far, the unit has filed over 10 cases.

Officials say such quacks often target vulnerable lower- and middle-income families in both rural and urban areas, exploiting their limited access to proper healthcare.

Malakar’s arrest raises serious concerns about oversight in private medical institutions and the need for stringent verification of credentials. Investigations into the hospitals involved are reportedly underway.
