TANGLA: With the arrival of the much-anticipated picnic season, Bhairabkunda, one of Assam’s most popular tourist destinations, is ready to welcome visitors once again. Located 137 kilometers from Guwahati in Udalguri district, Bhairabkunda sits at the confluence of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Bhutan. Its lush greenery, rolling hills, dense forests, and the roaring rivers that define the region make it an unmatched eco-tourism hotspot. Bhairabkunda is renowned for its pristine natural beauty, with the roaring Jampani River originating in Bhutan and merging with the Bhairabi River at this triangular junction to form the Jia Dhansiri River, a major tributary of the Brahmaputra. The fast-flowing rivers, combined with the region’s serene ambiance, attract thousands of nature lovers every year seeking a peaceful retreat. One of the unique attractions of Bhairabkunda is the opportunity to visit Bhutan with remarkable ease. Tourists can cross the international border on foot and explore the town of Daifam in Bhutan’s Samdrup Jongkhar district. Visitors can savor local Bhutanese cuisine, observe Buddhist culture and traditions, shop for Bhutanese products, and experience the distinct lifestyle of the region.
It's interesting to note that a lot of four-wheelers and bike riders from nearby areas choose Bhairabkunda for another obvious reason: the low cost of fuel in the area, where petrol and diesel are often supplied for an average of Rs. 61 and Rs. 65, respectively. However, tourists and picnic goers must carry their original Voter ID or Passport (for adults) and Birth Certificate (for children) to enter Bhutan as casual visitors. Adding to the charm of Bhairabkunda are the undulating trekking trails through the Bhairabkunda Reserve Forest, ideal for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts. These trails, alongside the picturesque rivers, provide ample opportunities for birdwatching and exploring the region’s tranquil landscape. The Bhairabkunda Eco Tourism & Conservation Society has taken proactive steps to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for visitors this season. Society member Rohit Daimary informed that the site has been thoroughly cleaned, with waste management systems in place. “More than a thousand people visit Bhairabkunda daily during the picnic season. We have taken all necessary precautionary measures to manage traffic and prevent untoward incidents. Teams will also be briefed on maintaining cleanliness and peace upon their arrival,” he stated. With its unmatched beauty and the convenience of visiting a foreign land, Bhairabkunda remains a perfect destination for tourists, adventure lovers, and picnic-goers seeking to reconnect with nature.
