Awareness meeting on suicidal tendency held in Mangaldai

Addiction to drugs and mental health condition both have a direct relation with the suicidal tendency.

MANGALDAI: "Addiction to drugs and mental health condition both have a direct relation with the suicidal tendency. However, study says that only in case of 10 per cent suicide incidents, mentally ill issues are associated," said Dr Prasanta Kalita, senior psychiatrist of Mangaldai Civil Hospital.

He was addressing an awareness meeting organized under the aegis of the District Mental Health in collaboration with Grace Foundation in the Drugs de-addiction Centre here at ward no 2 on the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day recently. Giving a detailed analysis on the causes of developing suicidal tendency and ways to overcome such negative thoughts, Dr Kalita said, "The thought of suicide lasts in the mind of an individual just for few minutes and this risky situation can easily be overcome with instant support from people surrounding him."

The awareness programme attended by the inmates of the De-addiction Centre, its volunteers, members of the Darrang Mental Health Program (DMHP) and others, was also addressed by clinical psychologist Rimpi Sultana, senior journalist Mayukh Goswami, Gautam Bhai and Munindra Bhai of the Prajapita Brahmalumari. Earlier, Puspa Kalita of the DMHP explained its objectives This was followed by counseling and treatment of the patients.
