SILCHAR: The BJP government had been depriving the Bengalis, as only one representative from one of the largest linguistic minority communities had been inducted into the ministry, stated Rakibul Hussain, Congress MP from Dhubri. Addressing a series of rallies in three districts of Barak Valley for the ensuing Panchayat election, Hussain said that during the Congress regimes, there were at least four Bengali ministers in the state’s cabinet. He further alleged that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had been polluting the social environment of the state with his nasty divisive politics. Hussain, however, expressed his confidence that in the next Assembly election, the people of Assam would reject the communal politics of the BJP and dethrone Himanta Biswa Sarma. “You defeat the BJP in the ensuing Panchayat election, and we will defeat Himanta Biswa in next year’s state election,” Hussain said.

Praising former Prime Minister Late Rajiv Gandhi for introducing the Panchayat Raj system in the country, Hussain said that when he was the Panchayat and Rural Minister in Tarun Gogoi’s government, he started 50 per cent seat reservation for the women in the rural bodies. Hussain said that the Congress had always been working for the rural and poor people, while the BJP was known for its proximity with the corporate houses, which resulted in uncontrollable price rises.
