DHEKIAJULI: The Bharat Bandh evoked a mixed reaction in Dhekiajuli subdivision. Business establishment, educational institutions and all government and semi-government offices remained closed during the Bandh hours. Commercial vehicles and logistic transport were off the road during the Bandh.
In Dhekiajuli town, early in the morning, Congress supporters came out on the street to make the bandh a success. But Dhekiajuli Police detained them and kept them in Dhekiajuli Police Station during the Bandh hours. Later in the evening, Sonitpur District Congress president Bhima Nanda Tanti and other Congress leaders went to Dhekiajuli Police Station and released them.
Sonitpur District Congress president and ACMS Borsola branch secretary Bhima Nanda Tanti told this correspondent that he visited entire Sonitpur district during the Bandh hours and released all the detainees from different police stations of the district and felicitated them. Tanti said that the present State and Central governments were working against the common people in all major issues. He added that the price rise of all essential commodities was due to the hike in petrol and diesel prices.
The Bandh also affected normal life in Thelamara, Borsola, Rakhyasmari, Singri and Belsiri areas of Dhekiajuli subdivision. However, no untoward incident took place in any part of Dhekiajuli subdivision during the bandh.
Biswanath Chariali: The 12-hour Bharat Bandh was total in Biswanath and Gohpur subdivisions in Biswanath district. All kinds of business establishments, banks, post offices, offices and shops remained closed throughout the day. Vehicles were off the NH-15. Bandh supporters shouted slogans against price rise and burnt tyres at several places in the district. Police also picked up some supporters at Baghmari.
Hojai: The Bharat Bandh affected normal life in Assam. A tense situation prevailed in Hojai police point with former Congress minister Ardhendu Dey being attacked while supporting the Bandh.
Dey alleged that BJP workers, who wanted to defy the Bandh call and opened shops, attacked him. The entire incident took place in the presence of the police, who subsequently rescued the Congress leader from the mob.
