MANGALDAI: The birth centenary of distinguished freedom fighter Late Harendra Saharia, a resident of Shitalabari (Bhuktabari) village of Sipajhar in Darrang district, was publicly commemorated. On this occasion, a memorial meeting was organized in Shitalabari village, jointly by the Darrang District Freedom Fighters’ Association and the initiative of Saharia’s family. The meeting, presided over by noted educationist and family member of the freedom fighter Bichitra Kumar Medhi, featured a speech by Dr Ramchandra Deka, retired vice-principal of Sipajhar College. Dr Deka highlighted how Harendra Nath Saharia, as the son of prominent freedom fighter Thaneshwar Saharia, was inspired by patriotism from a young age. To escape the atrocities of the British Police, he had to abandon his school education midway and seek refuge in Chapari during his adolescence. However, even while rearing cattle in Chapari, he remained actively involved in the Swaraj movement. Dr Deka expressed hope that the thrilling saga of this distinguished freedom fighter’s sacrifices would inspire the new generation of youth towards patriotism. The meeting, where Dr Binoy Ranjan Sharma, Secretary of Darrang District Freedom Fighters’ Association, explained the objectives, was attended by Jiten Bhagawati, former vice-president of the Assam State Freedom Fighters’ Association, senior journalist Bhargab Kumar Das, Dr Deepak Baruah, Professor at Bhattadev University, and Kumud Chandra Deka, a noted writer and former leader of the Assam Movement, among others. They shed light on Harendra Nath Saharia’s role in the freedom struggle.

During the event, a booklet dedicated to Harendra Nath Saharia, edited by Manjula Saharia, was released by Dr Utpal Nath, a Professor at Assam Engineering College, Guwahati, to mark the centenary celebration. Members of Harendra Nath Saharia’s family performed the song ‘Aji Bando Ki Chhandere Samagata Birata…’ written by Assam Kesari Ambikagiri Raychoudhury.
