BISWANATH CHARIALI: The Institution's Innovation Council of Biswanath College, in collaboration with the technical support from ICT cell of Assam College Librarians' Association, organized an international virtual seminar on 'Socio-economic Development and Ethnic Conflicts: Narratives from North-East India' on Saturday.
Dr Madhujya Prasad Bezboruah, Professor and former Head of the Department of Economics, Gauhati University, inaugurated the seminar with his thought-provoking speech. Speaking on the subject as resource person, Dr Namrata Goswami, Senior Analyst and Subject Matter expert in International Relations, Montgomery, Alabama, United States, highlighted how the century-long ethnic conflicts prevailed in Northeast India and were obstructing the socio-economic development in the region. Describing the potential of Northeast India as a developed socio-economic hub in the country, Dr Goswami gave a historical outline of the problem areas in the region. The speaker shared her research-based data and provided insights on the insurgent groups active in the region. She dwelt with the coercive and violent nature of the insurgent groups and counter-insurgency measures adopted by the State. Her lecture explored the discourses on conflict and examined the decade-long engagement for a peaceful resolution with the Union Government.
During the lockdown period, Biswanath College organized as many as three international webinars and four national webinars on pertinent issues till date.
