Guwahati: Assam's finance, health, and education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has set its sights on winning at least 100 seats in the upcoming assembly election in Assam to be held in 2021.

Stating that the saffron party has already kickstarted its campaign to reach people at the grassroots level, Sarma added that the party and its allies will retain power, after grabbing more than 100 seats in the 126-member Assembly in next year's polls.

"BJP and the allies are eyeing to win 100 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections, and it is my firm belief that the party along with its allies (the BPF and AGP) will manage to win at least 100 seats," Sarma added.

The Legislative Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in Assam in April of 2021.

In the previous elections in 2016, the election brought a change of power as the Indian National Congress (INC), which had formed the government under for 3 consecutive terms, lost its majority to the BJP led by Sarbananda Sonowal.

Next year, the Congress will team up with the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) to wrest power away from the saffron brigade.

Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) formed by the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) and the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP), will be another party that is expected to make inroads into the BJP vote bank.
