Bodoland Handloom Mission holds awareness meet to empower local weavers in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR: The Bodoland Handloom and Textile Mission under the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) organized a district-level awareness meeting on the textile industry in Kokrajhar on Friday. The event aimed to empower local weavers and entrepreneurs through discussions on the opportunities and benefits offered by the textile sector.

The meeting was inaugurated with a ceremonial lamp-lighting by Dhananjay Basumatary, Executive Member of the Handloom and Textile Department, BTC. In his address, Basumatary highlighted the significance of the mission in supporting the growth of the textile industry in Bodoland and improving the livelihoods of local artisans.

The key objective of the meeting was to explore collaborative strategies for weavers, designers, and entrepreneurs to harness the potential of the Bodoland Handloom and Textile Mission. Special focus was placed on the advantages of products that have received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

Pratibha Brahma, Mayor of Kokrajhar and a noted social worker, emphasized the importance of ensuring fair pricing for handloom products. She urged the department to implement measures that protect and promote the rights of weavers.

Reo Rera Narzihary, Chairperson of BRAWFED and BTC Councilor, assured attendees that BRAWFED would actively work to support weavers in securing just compensation for their work.

Among the distinguished attendees were Raktim Bora, Joint Secretary of BTC; Phami Brahma, Secretary; Kabita Deka, Additional Commissioner; and Hiranya Devi, Councilor of the Textile and Handloom Department. The event also drew several designers, resource persons, and other prominent figures from the textile sector.
