Cachar Gears Up for Grand 79th Independence Day Celebrations in Silchar

DC Mridul Yadav urges citizens to participate with patriotic zeal

Silchar: With the 79th Independence Day approaching, the Cachar district administration has unveiled an elaborate plan to celebrate the national festival with grandeur, dignity, and mass participation. In a high-level preparatory meeting held on Monday at the new conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s office, DC Mridul Yadav, IAS, set the tone for the celebrations, calling on citizens to take part in the festivities “with full enthusiasm and pride.”

The meeting was attended by senior officials from civil, police, paramilitary, and military departments, along with representatives from civil society and the business community. The multi-stakeholder participation reflected the spirit of unity and collective responsibility in commemorating the nation’s hard-won freedom.


“Independence Day is not just a date on the calendar, but a tribute to the sacrifices of our freedom fighters. I urge every resident of Cachar to join in and make this celebration a true reflection of our patriotic spirit,” said DC Mridul Yadav in his welcome address.

The DC also reviewed the progress of various departments and directed that all preparations be completed by August 13. After detailed deliberations, it was confirmed that the ceremonial event, including the VVIP flag hoisting and parade, will be held at the Police Parade Ground in Silchar.

Detailed Schedule of Events
The day will begin with patriotic music played city-wide from 5:30 AM to 6:30 PM, coordinated by the Regional Office of Information & Public Relations, Barak Valley Zone. Citizens are encouraged to hoist the national flag at their homes and business establishments at 7:00 AM, followed by official flag hoisting at government offices and educational institutions at 7:45 AM, accompanied by the National Anthem.

At 8:35 AM, floral tributes will be offered at Gandhi Bagh to Mahatma Gandhi, followed by tributes at the Swahid Tarpan memorial at 8:45 AM. The ceremonial flag hoisting by a VVIP is scheduled for 9:00 AM, followed by a combined parade featuring contingents from CRPF, Assam Police, Home Guards, 6th AP Battalion, NCC, Scouts, and Guides.

Cultural Showcases and Sports Events
The celebration will continue with a vibrant cultural programme at the Police Parade Ground, highlighting the rich ethnic and cultural diversity of Cachar. At 4:00 PM, an exhibition football match between the District Bar Association and the District Sports Association will be held at the DSA Ground. As part of the visual celebrations, statues, rotaries, government buildings, and even private homes will be lit up from 6:00 PM onward, enveloping Silchar in a glow of patriotic fervour.

The meeting was attended by Additional District Commissioners Roktim Baruah (ACS), Hemanga Navis (ACS), District Development Commissioner Norsing Bey (ACS), Assistant Commissioners Jonali Devi (ACS), Bonnykha Chetia (ACS), Anjali Kumari (ACS), and Additional Superintendent of Police Subrata Sen (APS), among other senior officials. ADC Hemanga Navis also read out the minutes of last year’s meeting to guide the planning process.

The district administration has emphasized that this year’s Independence Day celebrations aim to be inclusive, well-coordinated, and deeply meaningful. With community participation at the heart of the plan, Cachar looks set to pay a proud tribute to the spirit of India’s freedom.
