DHUBRI: A candlelight protest was held recently at Railgumti near Hind Yuvak Sangha of Dhubri town to create awareness and build opinion to seek justice for Mamta Kumari who met a tragic death under mysterious condition on May 29.

As reported, she hanged herself from the ceiling fan in her rented room near Bilasipara town of Dhubri district. The death of TET teacher Mamta Kumari in Bilasipara, who hailed from Tinsukia district, sent shockwaves in Tinsukia and Dhubri districts.

To register protest, a candlelight programme was organized by Dhubri District unit of All Assam Bhojpuri Parishad and Hind Yuvak Sangha with the support of Dhubri Lions Club, Dhubri town unit of Simanta Chetana Mancha and the people of Dhubri. Talking to The Sentinel, secretary of Dhubri district unit of All Assam Bhojpuri Parishad, Lakhi Narayan Razak said that Mamta Kumari’s death was shrouded in mystery and should be properly investigated.

“As per information, she was in a relation with a boy and the boy had started blackmailing her by posting her private information and materials on social media. She could not bear this and was compelled to commit the act. So, it amounts to murder,” Razak alleged.

President of Dhubri Town committee of Simanta Chetan Mancha, Udayan Chakraborty said that Mamta Kumari was staying alone in a rented house away from her home in Tinsukia.

“It is not fair to post a girl at a distance of 800 km from her home district. The education department should look into this issue seriously and get all the TET teachers reposted near their home districts,” Chakraborty said.

Secretary of Dhubri Lions Club, Sanjay Sethia, while participating in the candle protest, said that girls could serve anywhere but their safety and protection must be ensured by the government at any cost.

When contacted, Dhubri Superintendent of Police Yubraj Singh said that they had taken up the matter seriously and on the day of the incident, the man who was in a relationship with Mamta was booked and investigation was on.
