BISWANATH CHARIALI: Chaiduar College (Autonomous), Gohpur, successfully concluded its two-week-long Anti-Plastic and Environmental Awareness Campaign on June 18. The initiative, organized by the Department of Zoology in collaboration with WWF India, commenced on June 5 with the mission to eliminate single-use plastics and promote sustainable living.
The campaign was inaugurated by Dr Kishor Singh Rajput, who emphasized the urgent need for collective action against plastic pollution. A captivating street play, performed in the presence of Lukumoni Borah, Co-District Commissioner of Gohpur, vividly portrayed the detrimental effects of plastic waste on nature and society. Over the course of two weeks, the college hosted a diverse array of interactive and educational events, engaging students, faculty, local residents, and environmental experts. WWF India’s resource persons Aniruddha Dhamorikar, Jitul Kalita, and Iusuf Khan led insightful sessions on plastic pollution and biodiversity conservation, fostering critical dialogue and awareness.
A major highlight of the campaign was the ‘Waste to Wealth’ exhibition curated by retired Vice-Principal Diganta Gohain, featuring innovative functional and decorative items crafted from discarded materials. On June 10, a hands-on workshop demonstrated how used paper, newspapers, and gift wrappers could be transformed into beautiful decorative crafts, underscoring the importance of recycling and creative reuse. In a remarkable display of individual commitment, Guna Rajkhowa, an environmental activist from the Forest Department, was felicitated for personally planting over 200 saplings across the campus using his own resources.
The campaign also featured a massive tree plantation drive, with over 500 saplings planted by students, faculty, forest department staff, and local citizens, each participant contributing to the green initiative by planting at least one tree. A two-week-long signature campaign and a campus-wide pledge to ‘Say No to Single-Use Plastic’ further reinforced the collective resolve toward sustainable practices.
Other key highlights included environmental film screenings that educated and inspired audiences. An interactive expert session on environmental challenges posed by plastic was held, which saw the launch of an innovative ‘Exchange and Donation Hub,’ promoting reuse and circular economy principles. Guided visits to the college’s sustainable initiatives, such as a bee hive colony, vermicomposting unit, and a soon-to-be-launched silkworm rearing facility were made, each serving as a live model of eco-friendly practice. The programme was meticulously coordinated by Dr Mohini Mohan Borah, Head of the Department of Zoology, who ensured smooth execution and active participation throughout the campaign.
