LAKHIMPUR: Protest programmes opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 continue in Lakhimpur district. The Lakhimpur District Congress Committee (LDCC) staged a five-hour long symbolic fast as a mark of protest against the controversial Bill and demanded its immediate withdrawal. The dignitaries and activists of the political party under the district, led by president Dr. Joy Prakash Das, organized the protest programme in front of the Lakhimpur DC office from 10 am to 3 pm and became vocal against the Bill.
LDCC submitted a memorandum to the President of India and requested him to withdraw the Bill from the Parliament. According to LDCC, the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was laced with 'communally motivated humanism' and violation of the Indian Constitution, secular ideology of the nation as well as the Assam Accord. LDCC further opined that the Bill would turn the NRC update exercise in the State meaningless and endanger the Assamese culture, language and demographic structure of the State. Hence the LDCC requested the President to initiate appropriate steps to withdraw the Bill.
