JORHAT: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced the renovation and development of the Maidam complex of Lachit Barphukan.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister mentioned that the development project was announced at the very beginning of the year-long celebration of the 400th anniversary of the birth of the great Ahom general towards the end of last year. After going through the stipulated process, Himanta Biswa Sarma performed the Bhumipujan today for this upcoming project.
This project aims to implement the suggestions of the Lachit Barphukan Maidam Preservation Committee to preserve the grave of the General. The first and foremost step of this project is to preserve the maidam, followed by developing it into a beautiful heritage destination of the state. The highlight of this project will be a 125 feet tall statue of Lachit Barphukan to showcase his imposing military skills.
Apart from the maidam itself, the project aims at the creation of a heritage museum to showcase all the history and lore of Lachit Barphukan. Preservation of the artefacts belonging to the Ahom dynasty and showcasing them to visitors from around the globe are also included in the plans of the museum.
Spreading over an area of 49 bighas of land in the Gohaingoan region of Holongapar in the Jorhat district, this project will be created as a tourism destination for all researchers and enthusiasts. Steps will be taken to create a water body, beautify the entire area and expand the roads leading to the destination.
In order to help researchers, a small residential quarter will also be created to accommodate 20-25 visitors. A state-of-the-art auditorium with a capacity of five hundred people will also be created alongside the museum project. This will be utilised for cultural and social purposes in the region.
Himanta Biswa Sarma also added that this project will be completed by the month of April in 2025 and create an inflow of tourists to the region.
