Conference on 'Recent studies on Orchids of Eastern Himalaya' organized in Tinsukia

TINSUKIA: The Orchid Society of Eastern Himalaya (Assam Circle), a society formed to conserve the orchid germplasm of the region has organized a one-day National Conference on Monday on the theme 'Recent studies on Orchids of Eastern Himalaya' at its head office, Regional Germplasm Conservation Centre, Daisa Bordoloi Nagar, Tinsukia. The conference was organized in collaboration with Department of Botany, DHSK College, Dibrugarh, Department of Botany, Nowgong Girls College, Nagaon, Department of Botany, Silapathar College, Rupai High School, Chala Village Sanctuary Conservation Society and Abhiruchi Club.

The day-long programme was started by hoisting of the official flag of TOSEHIM by its president Dr. Jintu Sarma. In connection with the conference, its regional office was inaugurated by Dr. Amarjit Saikia, Principal of Bir Raghab Moran Govt Model College and i/c of Doomdooma College. The open session started with lighting of the ceremonial lamp. Prof. Sumpam Tangjang, Dept. of Botany, Rajiv Gandhi University participated as chief guest. Dr. Gajen Chandra Sarma, Former Curator of Department of Botany, Gauhati University, Dr. Krishna Chowlu, Deputy Director of Botanical Survey of India, Dr. Ona Apang, Orchidologist of State Forest Research Institute of Arunachal participated as guests of honour. Dr. Jintu Sarma, President of TOSEHIM-AC presided over the meeting.

In the seminar more than 70 participants joined, from Uttar Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Assam, who are working exclusively on various dimensions on Orchids of Indian Eastern Himalayan Region. In the seminar Dr G.C. Sarma inaugurated the 2nd issue of the bulletin of TOSEHIM-AC 'The TOSEHIM News'. In the open session Gunalata Gogoi and Sjt. Nagen Chandra Gogoi, who provided land for the office of TOSEHIM -AC have been felicitated.

In the seminar cum 2nd annual general meeting, the society decided to provide one life time achievement award every year. And for the current year, two eminent plant taxonomists of the region, Prof. Sudhangshu Choudhury and Dr. Padmeswar Gogoi will be awarded for their excellent contribution in organizing the plant wealth of Northeast India. The best presenter of the conference was awarded to Pranav Mega, a citizen scientist hailing from Roing, Arunachal Pradesh.
