GUWAHATI: Thousands of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) workers organized a huge protest on April 16 (Wednesday) by gheraoing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office at G.S. Road in Guwahati.

The protest was as part of a nation-wide agitation initiated by the Indian National Congress against what it terms the "draconian" approach of the Modi government.

These protests were prompted by recent actions against the party such as the attachment of National Herald assets and lodging of charge sheets against top leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. With placards in hand and raising slogans, the protesters reacted with outrage at the alleged abuse of central agencies for political vendetta.

APCC President Bhupen Borah led the protest and accused the BJP government of politicizing the ED. "The ED is a political tool, and we will never allow this injustice. The political targeting of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi is not acceptable. The APCC stands solidly behind them," he stated.

Senior Congress leader Ripun Bora also seconded similar views, saying, "Agencies like the ED and CBI are being used by the BJP to further its own political agenda. This is an attack on democracy. We are here to defend our constitutional institutions and resist the BJP's politics of revenge."

Other leaders and staff of Congress also followed suit, vowing to persevere in their fight against what they called the non-democratic moves of the central government.
