DIGBOI: Digboi BJP MLA Suren Phukan on Wednesday begged apology from the people of Assam for the “gloomy picture of the Moran Community painted by the communal politics of the Congress party.” Phukan, accompanied by Rajya Sabha MP Rameswar Teli and party leaders, was addressing a press meet at Digboi MP Office on Wednesday afternoon.

The legislator explained at length the unfortunate incident involving a youth Kalpajyoti Phukan who he said was falsely accused of sharing objectionable statements on phone to Congress leader Rajiv Moran alias Lachit Moran on Monday. Phukan alleged that the Congress leader communalised the incident the next day.

“In order to grind the political axe of the Congress, Moran incited a few Moran youths who assaulted Kalpajyoti Phukan near his residence and further shaved his head and made him kneel down holding ears in a half-naked state in Tingrai Bazar the next day morning’, alleged the legislator.

“Had the police not arrived at the site and rescued the victim amidst tough resistance by the agitators, the victim was sure to be lynched,” informed Suren Phukan, adding, “I personally expressed gratitude to Assam Police. The peace-loving Moran community people have been adversely portrayed before the people of the state in the social media following the incident,” said the Digboi MLA.

“As claimed, the arrested accused was not a member of Moran Students Union, Moran Sabha and the like ,” cleared the MLA wondering why then he dragged the community into the inferno.

“I being a Moran leader rather feel the urge to beg apology from the people of the state and would like to clarify that it was only a handful of Congress-motivated Moran youths and not the whole community who had committed the offence on May 6, sparking sensation across the state,” shared Suren Phukan.

Criticising the mean approaches of the Congress to gain community sympathy, Phukan also blamed Raijor Dol leader Umananda Mudoi Moran for mentioning the act persistently in social media in the name of community.

“The Opposition must maintain minimum ethics in politics and should not create chaos and unrest in the society in their race for power,” said the MLA, adding that the police should take cognizance of the case and initiate steps against the erring individuals in questions.

MP Rameswar Teli, also terming the incident as unfortunate, demanded the competent authority to immediately initiate steps against the erring individuals and book them under appropriate sections of the law.
