GUWAHATI: Two-time Congress MLA Sushanta Borgohain is reportedly set to join Assam's ruling party BJP on August 2.

Borgohain, who represents the Thowra constituency in the Assam Assembly, is likely to resign from the Congress party anytime soon. Borgohain had defeated BJP candidate Kushal Duwari in the Thowra constituency and was elected to the Assembly.

Notably, Sushanta Borgohain will be the second MLA from the Congress party to join the BJP after the saffron party comes to power in Assam for the second time.

Speaking to the media, the Congress MLA told that Assam BJP leadership has invited him to join hands with them.

Earlier, in June 2021, former Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Notably, Kurmi tendered his resignation letter to Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimari on Friday and resigned from the Congress too. After his resignation, Kurmi spewed venom against State Congress president Ripun Bora, senior leader Rockyibul Hussain and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, alleging their inefficient leadership for the ill-fate of Congress in the consecutive elections in the State and across the nation.

Kurmi joined BJP in a formal programme held at the NHPC Guest House located at Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project site at Gerukamukh under Dhemaji district in the presence of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. The Chief Minister accorded him a warm welcome to BJP.

"Rupjyoti Kurmi is a strong youth leader. We have welcomed him to BJP with love. I welcome him to the party on behalf of the central leadership too," said Sarma. On the other hand, Kurmi, who was four-time MLA in a row from Mariani, criticized the Congress for denying the position that the youth leaders deserved. He said that he joined the BJP as he was 'attracted to the dynamism of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma'.

"I should have joined the BJP long ago. At present, the BJP has marched forward with a dynamic view to ensure development across the State under the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma. So, I joined the party with an objective of development in the State," Rupjyoti Kurmi said while lauding the Chief Minister. He honoured Dr. Sarma by presenting a trident (trishul) in the programme.
